A
coastal walk of distinction, Garden Route Trail passes through a diversity
of habitats in the Southern Cape coastal plain of South Africa. The
region named for the diversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom, is positioned
between the Summer rainfall region of the Eastern Cape and the Mediterranean
winter rainfall region of the Cape. Due to this transitional climatic
region each season and each month presents a incredible diversity of
weather and the environment. The Cape Floral Kingdom, or Fynbos as it
is locally known, unique to this region, is the smallest and most diverse
of six globally recognized floral Kingdoms. And it is through this natural
splendor which Garden Route Trail passes.
To share the dynamic nature of the natural diversity of this region,
Garden Route Trail maintains a journal to capture the monthly change
that takes place along the route to assist you in planning your trail
and Birding outings in the region.
October
2009 - Yet another dry and windy month with beach sands washed
away and the forest looking exceptionally dry. Beach had some of the
largest Blue Bottles washed up around the spring tides. Most disappointing
has been the drop in bird species though the call of the olive Bush
Shrike has been constant all month. The drought continues and visitors
are requested to use water sparingly.
