Toady's Way Points :

Here are the way points for the 2010 Geo Oyster. Have fun and enjoy the adventure!

Day 5 - Fri 9th July :

Well, the week had to come to an end. Today is tight, cross cultural and requires a bit of Sudoku skills. We have some teams that are definately taking this seriously, though Xterra seemed to get in the way of todays proceedings with one team calling us at about 20h00 for help with WP 9 - they did not have torches and wanted to know if something would eat them in the dark.

  • WP # 10 : S34 00 33.2 E23 01 05.1 - my best advice is 'plan your approach well'. You are looking for a 3 digit code. I imagine some teams will be getting wet. Two prizes again.
  • WP # 11 : S34 02 07.6 E23 06 34.4 - This is the one, a Sudoku. I played many to get this finishing sequence. Hope you enjoy the locals. Best is if you turn your car around before settling down to solve this one. Two prizes again. Send team pics at WP to 082 2135931.
  • WP # 12 : Well that is for you to work out. This is a rare gem in Knysna and I will enjoy waiting around for you all. Remember the typo with the E and S on the matrix

Day 4 - Thur 8th July :

Today takes you into some magnificent forest, home to the only free roaming elephants in South Africa and to some incredible leopards.

  • WP # 8 : S33 57 46.3 E23 09 18.8 - hidden between the buttress roots of a tall Ironwood, you are looking for a 3 digit code. If the Bushpigs have not stolen it, there is a six pack of Energy 4 U from Pick n Pay. First prize - a Nandos voucher, second prize, a R50.00 Pick n Pay voucher. When you are here spend a moment in silence and feel the forest surrounding you.
  • WP # 9 : S33 56 41.8 E23 04 01.6 - placed near an old homestead site, there is a cluster of old Yellowwoods and some lemon trees, a legacy of settlers from the 1900's. You are looking for a 3 digit code and once again, if the bushpigs have not got there first, there is a six pack of Energy 4 U from Pick n Pay. First prize, Nandos hamper, second prize, R50.00 Pick n Pay voucher. When setting this WP up, I spent 10 minutes leaning against a tree and heard an animal walking towards me. Then at the last moment as it was about to come out of the forest, my phone ran. So I never got to see it. To make a day of it, both WP's have wonderful picnic sites close by. relax and enjoy. To claim prizes for both WP's, text photo to 0822135931

Notices - please note that I had a typo error on the code matrix - the E and S of WP # 12 must be swapped over - the rest of the squares stay as they are, just the letters get changed. I have also pasted some images that everyone has sent in on a team and results page - click here to access so you can see you are exploring with.

Day 3 - Wed 7th July :

Today is a relaxed day with some wonderful scenery, a glimpse at the inspiration of one of South Africa's most famous authors and the scene of one of the first gold rushes in the world.

  • WP # 6 : S33 53 01.1 E23 00 05.1 - This is the site of a maze of tunnels. Take time to look in a few of them. At this WP there is a bright green sign - what is the name on it? First team to reach this WP gets a R100.00 Pick n Pay voucher. Send photo to 082 213 5931
  • WP # 7 : S33 55 00.2 E22 57 28.1 - Circles in the bush - Author Dalene Matthee loved visiting this area for inspiration - What is the name of the place she went to replenish her soul? First team here gets a voucher for two for the Moonlight Meander valued at R120.00. Send photo to 082 213 5931

Day 2 - Tue 6th July :

Today you will be heading east and having a bicycle can be a help - WP #5 is about 1.7km from the parking spot. It is also a great place to go cycling. If you have a Wild card, take it along. If you have time, take a picnic bag alog and enjoy brunch. There is a Pick n Pay voucher, a Nandos Voucher, a wine hamper and a Nandos hamper up for grabs today. Hint - there is no mobile reception around these points, so have the details before you get there!

  • WP #4 : S34 04 35.6 E23 13 45.0 - along a wonderful forest walk. Take your time and enjoy. Clue for this location : what are the two numbers on the pegs at this WP? Take a pic of your team between the two signs. First team to this WP gets a wine hamper. Second team gets a Nandos Voucher.
  • WP #5 : S34 04 14.5 E23 13 04.9 - on a cycle route. You are looking for a sign for cyclists and you need to record the colours of the two direction signs at this WP.First team gets a Pick n Pay voucher, second team gets a Nandos hamper. Send your photo's to 082 213 5931

Day 1 - Mon 5th July :

Today you will need a notebook and pen to record three codes, one from each WP. You can collect a Code Matrix from the Sedgefield Tourism after 09h00 and Knysna Tourism after 10h00. It is best that you set you GPS to the following format : hddd°mm'ss.s"

  • WP #1 : S34 02 08.2 E22 45 56.9 - for this way point you will need to check out the tide table to plan your approach. Today is a bird watching day. Look out for the Giant Kingfisher feeding from the rock pools on the way. You are looking for a three digit code hidden in a pile of rocks. Tom Thumb lying on his back would see this easily..
  • WP # 2 : S33 59 25.8 E22 44 16.3 - not a well known location. Another three digit code, also best seen looking at the sky. Best to stick to the path, it is just about choosing the correct approach. First team to reach this way point gets a Nandos Hamper and voucher. MMS a team photo to 082 213 5931
  • WP # 3 : S34 02 14.6 E22 56 28.2 - A perfect spot to relax after the walks of the morning. The clue that you are looking for is on a photograph by Dennis Moore of a train climbing up to Belvedere. Question : What is the class and number of the train featured in the photo? Only fill in the numbers.

Instructions :

  1. GPS format : Way points are given in Lat/Lon hddd'mm'ss.s" format. Please adjust your GPS or navigator accordingly.
  2. Datum : Datum is WGS 84
  3. Codes : You need to collect 11 codes at the first 11 waypoints. At each way point record the code in the code matrix. You can collect your code matrix at either Knysna or Sedgefield Tourism or download it here. From the code matrix you will then have to work out the co ordinates for way point #12, the final way point.
  4. Code Matrix - the code matrix will have space for each way point and a grid converting the letters of any alphabetic codes to a numeric value. Insert all answers and codes into the correct waypoint space. The numbers in the circle are then placed in the correctly numbered position of waypoint 12.
  5. Please respect any property, private or state, that you traverse.
  6. The true essence of this event is to display some of the wonderful diversity we have in and around the Greater Knysna Basin. So, take the time to enjoy getting to each way point.
  7. Once you have found all way points meet Mark at the finish point.

See you at the finishing post - so to speak. Have fun!
