Uniquely Karoo
The Karoo is a spectacular landscape of wide open spaces, incredible geological landscapes and stark silence. Considered a semi-desert, the Karoo is an ideal location to take a break from urban pressures, to relax and revitalize your entire being. Millennia of evolution has produced a remarkable ecosystem through a geological time frame of 400 million years.
Hiking through this vast landscape invokes a sense of place within and allows an unimpeded interaction with the remarkable fauna and flora of the region.
Hiking in the Karoo
In conjunction with Wide Open Spaces, Garden Route Trail is pleased to offer two new Karoo hiking trails, the Karoo Stone Folk Trail and the Karoo Stoep Tasting and Hiking Experience.
Based in the Nieu Bethesda district, the two trails combine farm stay hospitality and wilderness hiking through remarkable geology and vast open landscapes.
Karoo Stone Folk Trail
Conducted between March and October, the Karoo Stone Folk Trail traverses grassland plateaus, weaves through river gorges and amogst rocky hills. The itinerary is a 4 night, three day hiking tour across three private properties.
The daily stages range between 15km and 18km, hiking between 6 and 7 hours with stops along the way. The trail allows hikers to experince some hidden parts of the Karoo, and is ideal for hikers that enjoy spending the better part of a day outdoors.
Karoo Stoep Tasting and Hiking Experience
The Karoo Stoep Tasting and Hiking Experience takes place over two weekends in May each year and was created to offer hikes for patrons of the Karoo Stoep Tasting Wine Festival which takes place on the Friday and Saturday.
The tour includes three daily hikes ranging between 7km and 10km and includes a wine tasting ticket and the Karoo Culinary wine pairing dinner.
