The Karoo Stoep Tasting and Hiking Experience is a weekend of a unique blend of wine tasting, culinary and hiking in the heart of the Greater Karoo.
Based in the Nieu Bethesda district, guests are hosted in farm stay accommodation. In the morning, we go on a short guided hike exploring geology, botany and wildlife tracks. In the afternoon guest visit the Stoep Wine Tasting Festival. On Sunday we hike a magnificent canyon, marvelling at the geology and the silence typical of the Karoo.
On Saturday evening, after wine tasting, we meet up for a Karoo culinary and wine paring dinner in Nieu Bethesda.

Uniquely Karoo
The Karoo is a spectacular landscape of wide open spaces, incredible geological landscapes and stark silence. Considered a semi-desert, the Karoo is an ideal location to take a break from urban pressures, to relax and revitalize your entire being. Millennia of evolution has produced a remarkable ecosystem through a geological time frame of 400 million years.
Hiking through this vast landscape invokes a sense of place within and allows an unimpeded interaction with the remarkable fauna and flora of the region.
Planning for Karoo Hiking
Desert Hiking
The trail is between an altitude of 1250m and 1500m and guests require a moderate level of fitness. Daily stages are between 7km and 10km with hike times of 3.5 hours to 5 hours.
The trail follows Jeep tracks, sheep tracks and, for sections, traverses the natural grassland, all of which are undulating surfaces. Ankle strength and mobility are vital for this hike.
The low relative humidity, altitude and heat require a higher than usual intake of water.

The cost for the tour is :

- A single supplement of R950.00 is applicable.

Day 1 : Guests arrive at Doornberg farmstead and check in. Once settled in, guests can simply relax on the stoep, or take a stroll along one of the tracks. Dinner is a wholesome Karoo farm meal..
Day 2 : After breakfast, we head out on a guided morning walk to the Stone Folk exhibit and through the valley. After lunch, guests make their way into Nieu Bethesda to participate in the Wine tasting festival. We meet back at the farm stay for dinner.
Day 3 : After breakfast, we head out on a guided morning walk to some stone koppies. After lunch, guests make their way into Nieu Bethesda to participate in the Wine tasting festival. Dinner is in town.
Day 4 : After breakfast, we transfer to Genora Farm for the canyon hike. Dinner is at the farm stay.
Day 5 : After a relaxed breakfast, guests depart.
